From Math Rock Polyrhythms to EBM Shadowplays: New York’s Loudest Subgenre Collisions This Week

New Yorkindie

Forget the bloated festival fairgrounds; the real action in New York this week is happening in the dark, sweaty confines of our legendary club circuit. On Thursday, (Le) Poisson Rouge hosts a staggering showcase of fretboard fireworks and polyrhythmic genius. Math rock pioneers Covet, fronted by the endlessly inventive Yvette Young, will bring their signature blend of liquid tapping and instrumental emotionalism. They are joined by Tokyo’s post-rock stalwarts LITE and midwest emo wizards Hikes, making this an absolute must-see for anyone who appreciates technical precision served with raw, visceral heart.

If your tastes lean more toward sonic devastation and dense atmospheres, Thursday also offers a dream pop and heavy shoegaze summit at Warsaw. Headliners Turnover are set to spin their nostalgic, melancholic web alongside the crushing, grunge-adjacent riffs of Narrow Head and the ethereal textures of she's green. But the descent into the shadows does not stop there. On Friday night, Webster Hall transforms into a smoke-choked sanctuary of EBM and darkwave. Twin Tribes will lead the congregation with their icy, driving basslines and haunting melodies, flanked by Riki’s stark, hardware-driven synthpop and the industrial weight of Dancing Plague.

To round out the weekend, Saturday brings an iconic pairing of legacy acts to Forest Hills Stadium for a masterclass in chamber pop and angular alternative rock. Conor Oberst’s Bright Eyes returns to deliver their literate, orchestration-heavy songwriting, sharing the stage with the legendary Built to Spill, whose master-level guitar heroics and alternative rock blueprint still sound as vital and sharp as they did two decades ago. From intricate math-rock patterns to the deepest goth-club pulses, these shows are the lifeblood of the city's underground.
